Daily Taraweh Reminder: Day 20

Taraweeh Reflection
Day 20: Juzz 20
The Story of Qarun and Its Lessons

The story of Qarun is told in Qur’an Surah Al-Qasas (28:76–83) in Juz’ 20. It is one of the Qur’an’s most important stories about wealth, arrogance, and the true meaning of success.

1. Qarun’s Extraordinary Wealth

Qarun was from the people of Moses (Bani Israel), yet he became arrogant and oppressive.

The Qur’an says:

“Indeed Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he oppressed them. We gave him treasures whose keys would burden even a group of strong men.” (28:76)

His wealth was so immense that even the keys to his treasure chests were heavy for strong men to carry.

2. Wise Advice Given to Qarun (Key Verse from Juz’ 20)

Some righteous people advised him with a powerful principle about wealth:

“But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And do not seek corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not love the corrupters.” (28:77)

This verse provides four guiding principles:

1️⃣ Use your blessings to seek the Hereafter
2️⃣ Enjoy the world responsibly without forgetting God
3️⃣ Be generous and do good to others
4️⃣ Avoid corruption and injustice

This verse is often considered one of the Qur’an’s clearest teachings on how to handle wealth and success.

3. Qarun’s Arrogant Response

Instead of accepting this advice, Qarun said:

“I was only given it because of knowledge I have.” (28:78)

He believed his wealth came purely from his own ability, ignoring that it was ultimately a blessing and test from God.

4. The Temptation of Material Success

When Qarun appeared before people displaying his luxury, many admired him:

“If only we had what Qarun has been given! Indeed he has great fortune.” (28:79)

But those with knowledge replied:

“The reward of Allah is better for those who believe and do good.” (28:80)

This shows how people often mistake wealth for true success.

5. Qarun’s Destruction

Because of his arrogance and corruption, God punished him:

“We caused the earth to swallow him and his home.” (28:81)

His wealth, palace, and power could not save him.

6. The People Realize the Truth

Those who once envied him realized their mistake:

“If Allah had not been gracious to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us too.” (28:82)

They understood that wealth without humility can lead to ruin.

Key Lessons from the Story

1. Wealth Is a Test

Material success does not necessarily mean God’s approval.

2. Arrogance Destroys

Believing “I achieved everything myself” leads to spiritual downfall.

3. Balance Between World and Hereafter

The verse in 28:77 teaches that Islam encourages responsible enjoyment of the world while prioritizing the Hereafter.

4. True Success Is Spiritual

The story ends with a powerful principle:

“That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not seek superiority on earth nor corruption.” (28:83)

True success belongs to those who are humble, righteous, and conscious of God.

✅ Central message of the story:
Wealth itself is not condemned—but arrogance, corruption, and forgetting God turn wealth into a path of destruction.

Real success is humility, righteousness, and striving for the Hereafter.
