Zakat, unlike other forms of Sadaqah, is an obligatory act of worship. Like Salah, it comes with conditions that must be met, responsibilities that must be fulfilled, and—most importantly—the correct intention in performing this great worship.
At Southgate Mosque, we provide a Zakat service to help Muslims fulfil this obligation in a way that is clear, careful, and in line with Islamic guidance. We encourage giving locally to support those in hardship within our community, in keeping with the Prophetic tradition. Wherever possible, Zakat received through Southgate Mosque is distributed to eligible recipients locally in the UK.
Southgate Mosque is committed to developing a robust Zakat service—collecting and distributing Zakat in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah—to serve our local community and support those most in need.
The eligibility criteria for Zakat recipients are defined by Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’ala) Himself in the Qur’an, emphasising the importance and seriousness of both giving and receiving Zakat:
“Zakat is only for the poor, the needy, those employed to administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing captives, for those in debt, for the cause of Allah, and for the traveller—an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:60)
